I see the "don't create a symbol unless you have to" optimization as a
separate issue (one that we might implement before using shared
library technology).  The overhead of shared library binding when an
image is first run is still unknown, since there are no full
implementations of Common Lisp that use this technology.  This is all
I was trying to say.  On the greater issue, I think we all agree that
this technology bears looking into.
