I've noticed this, too. This is particularly annoying since for some
reason I have a habit of writing to the same generation most of the time,
except when I'm going to radically change something (this is probably because
I REALLY don't want to know how many times I've saved a file...). Actually,
I'm not sure that it's the number of write count that matters, it's probably
one of the bits in the backup word (like, "has this file been incrementally
dumped?"). It's probably the fault of OPENF% or something like that,
though, not EMACS.
