(STATUS TTY TYO) certainly ought to work OK. There is no reason to restrict
it to input files, since ITS doesn't care. If you're hacking the CADDR,
many of those bits effect OUTPUT as well, and it's stupid and wrong to have
to hack the TTYCONS of the file to read them.
