Did you try your example on MC? There used to be a bug in MAKE-STRING that was
fixed. Try brining over a new STRING FASL and STRAUX FASL and see if the
problem goes away. Also, bring over a new EXTEND FASL, there was a bug there
that used to screw string GCing in another way.
