I see that the more processor now ignores control chars... unfortunately,
it flushes altmode. Maybe a better test would be to look at the syntax,
and see if the character gets TOTALLY ignored - eg. ^S shouldn't be ignored,
since it is a splicing macro, and $ is extended ascii (i presume).

^S and <ALT> are now handled specially and not ignored.
