(1) I have occasionally wanted () instead of NIL, but agree that NIL
is probably the best default.
(2) I think there should be a  flag that the user can set to get ()
instead of NIL, but FLATSIZE et al should check this flag and give
consistant results.  Perhaps the flag should be set automatically
whenever READ or READLIST gets "NIL" or "()" as input, thus if the user
inputs () he will get () rather than NIL as output.  Not sure....
