Your charges of ignoring Macsyma are unfounded. You yourself point out
the proper way to deal with the problem of old files with CR's in them.
If you do (STATUS SYNTAX /
) in 1861, and set CR to that syntax, you will get the old behaviour.
The Old-files problem (re the change to CR) is indeed completely solved
this way, except for the overly-long symbol which was PRINTed out with
vertical-bars. Frankly, I don't believe there are any such symbols in
existing files.
