Blinking character mouse is pointing at

While we're at it, maybe when the mouse is far from any text
nothing should be highlighted.  At present it finds the nearest
character to the mouse, no matter how far away it is.

And I still think there should be a way of hiding the mouse
completely.  Lower right corner is not invisible: it fucks
up the left end of the mode line.
