If you do control-greek-E to compile a function, it shows "Compiling FOO" in the mode line while compiling, which is OK, and then types "FOO compiled." on the mode line, where it immediately gets wiped out. The "FOO compiled." ought to be on the line below the mode line so that you can see it.
