Devastating results of m-X Edit Word Abbbreviations when not in word abbreviation mode

In ZWEI in Release 5.1, Experimental MIT 1.4, FEP 18, on TELLURIDE (3600):

     I have found that trying to edit word abbreviations when not in
word abbreviation mode (on TELLURIDE or on PI) leads to results which
are excessively devastating.  I get a message that the window system is
locked and the cold load stream is being used, and then I get thrown
into the debugger and have lots of trouble straightening things out.
