reading pixmaps into CLX

Hi,

Does anyone know how to load pixmaps from a file into CLX.  There is a
function in CLX called read-bitmap-file but I can't figure out what it
wants as input.  The documentation says "... image in standard X
format", but there seem to be several standard X formats.  Anyway,
that function refuses to read XPM files produced by the SUN Icon
Editor, complaining that the file is not a BITMAP file.

All help appreciated.
