Background Color in CLIM

CLIM 2.0     Allegro 4.2

We are defining an application frame  and want to
set the background color of the entire frame (in fact this
means to set the color of the top level sheet). 
I can change the color after the call to 'make-application-frame'
with 'medium-background', but the panes have already inherited
the original color by then.

Which variable is used as the default background color, and how
do I set/access it?
