We are now ready to distribute Franz Lisp Opus 38. We are distributing
the source for the lisp system (lisp, liszt, lxref and The Franz Lisp Manual)
and typeset copies of The Franz Lisp Manual. The manuals must be sent
by U.S. Mail; the source for the lisp system can be obtained using FTP
over the ArpaNet, or from a magnetic tape sent through the U.S. Mail.
The source for the lisp system includes Makefiles which will build the
lisp system from the source alone on systems which run Berkeley 4bsd
Vax Unix. This distribution may also run on other Vax Unix systems although
you will need the Berkeley version of the assembler (which we don't supply).
VMS users can run the lisp system only with the Eunice library package
(write to David Kashtan, kashtan@sri-unix: or

for more details.)
If you obtain a copy, you are free to "improve" it or make copies for
other people. We would appreciate hearing about improvements and further
distributions.
The lisp system source is distributed in one of two ways:
1) The Arpanet
The lisp system source is distributed as a 1.7 megabyte shell script.
The script is broken up into nine files, each slighly less than 200K bytes.
All files contain only Ascii characters (0001-0177).

These pieces are on the ucb-c70 arpanet host (directory /users/lisp/lispuser).
If you don't have an account on the ucb-c70 and would like to ftp these
files, mail me (jkf@berkeley) a message and let me know what password
you would like the account to have. When the account is set up I will
mail you a reply. (We are currently trying to find a arpanet machine with
an anonymous login to store our files.)
After you get the files, just say:
cat opus38* | sh
and the files will be extracted. Then read the file ReadMe for
instructions.
2) Mag Tape
If you can't get to an Arpanet host, we will send you the
distribution by magnetic tape in tar format.
There are three options:
a) we supply the tape: we will purchase a 1200 foot tape, put the
distribution on it and mail it to you. First you must
send us $200 for the tape, copying, mailing. A manual will
be included. Eloquent pleas of poverty will be considered.
b) you get it from someone else who got it from us: we will forward
to you a list of other UNIX sites wishing to provide distribution
(any volunteers?) for less.
c) you wait for the next (4.2 BSD) distribution, scheduled for the fall.
The lisp source contains the source for the lisp manual in nroff/troff format.
It also contains an nroff'ed version of the manual. If you would like
a copy of a phototypeset version, send us $15 and we will mail you one.
The manual is copyrighted, but you may make copies of it as long as the
copies are not sold for a profit.
