I don't understand the motivation for this discussion. I have not yet
needed such a feature. I have always been able to employ a trivial
workaround on the rare occasions when what you're arguing for ha scome
up. (Sorry to be using Lisp syntax here, I don't have a Dylan spec
handy).
I agree that this feature is not strictly necessary. However, several
of our users have asked for it, so I've given the question a little
bit of thought. One advantage of the feature is that you don't have
to document two different interfaces to the same functionality -- one
for calling, and one for extension. (This hasn't stopped EuLisp from
using your idea for the few functions in the definition which take
optional arguments.)
