regular event

What's the best way to have something done on a regular, frequent basis.

eg  I want a windoid to automagically update its display very frequently.

I won't even tell you my current hack as it's too disgusting.

PS  I'd prefer a "clean" answer that didn't involve posting events and
such-like.  That's a bit like killing a fly with a hammer...it seems to me.
