In such a dialog there is an ambiguity. Are you choosing the directory
currently displayed, or the one which is highlighted?
I'm not sure whether I want both capabilities or just one [which one?].
In any case, making it crystal clear to the user which dir they are
selecting is paramount.
I've been thinking about that too. First, I think there should be a
"Select" button, different from the "Open" one (obviously, one wants to go
down the hierarchy also and double-clicking shouldn't be the only way).
Then, the select button should select what is hilited... If nothing is
hilited, the directory currently displayed should be selected. And to
be complete and coherent, I think that in all file/directory dialogs
that have nothing selected in the displayed list, the name of the
currently displayed directory should be hilited (then, the "Open" button
should be dimmed, while the "Select" one stays enabled).
