fns not being called

After upgrading from 2.0 beta to 2.0 final (and reloading and
recompiling), I've discovered that some of my functions aren't being
called unless some of the files are opened re-evaluated with
*compile-definitions* switched off.  It may be my imagination, but the
problem seems to occur only in event handlers.   (Mind you this code
worked fine under the beta version.)

I had this problem before, years ago, but I can't remember what caused
it.  Would someone please refresh my memory?  Thx.
