logical pathnames and hosts

Thanks, everybody, for pointing out the logical
pathname and host facilities as being the kind of thing
I needed to get portability across machines and systems.  It works!
 
As somebody else pointed out, this part of Steele is extremely
obscure -- the very brief treatment in the MCL reference manual
was actually very useful in giving another cut on the problem.
So what is needed in an FAQ is mention of this facility along
with a juicy example.
