Wierd Problem With Quadra

I have a strange problem with a Quadra 950 running 7.1 does anybody
have any thoughts on what might be happening?  The problem is that
The System reports a damaged system file when I try to enable
virtual memory (which I had been using for several months).  I have
reloaded/reinstalled using the installer but continue to have the
problem.  Everything else seems to work fine (as long as I
don't have virtual memory turned on).
