Heirarchical menus limit

I seem to remember some Apple guidelines that you can't
have heirarchical menus more than 5 deep.
And I just tried to make one 6 deep. I didn't get a warning or anything,
the 6th level simply isn't on the menu.
Is this limit indeed enforced?
Is there a way around the limit?
