memory maximum for MCL?

I vaguely recall that there is a limit to the amount of
memory I can give MCL, and that this limit is below
256 MB, i.e. that I cannot buy a Mac with 256 MB and
run an MCL application which uses all of it (or, say,
254 MB with 2 remaining for the system).

Is this true, and if yes, what is the limit?
