bitmaps and views

I need to do some simple operations on views and bitmaps, and the mcl
manuel doesn't appear to have the relevent documentation. Does anyone
know how to:

1. painting bitmaps onto views
2. extracting the bitmaps that represent views

any help or references to the appropriate docs is appreciated.
