sgi's mips 4000 indigo processor

I have an sgi with a mips 4000 processor (IP20)
running irix 4.0.5F.  I tried compiling akcl 1.615
first with add-defs sgi, but this would not
compile with any setting of SGI_CC.  Then
I tried compiling with add-defs sgi4d, which worked
with SGI_CC=-cckr.  However, it doesn't work
well after loading files.

might someone have fixes for irix 4.0.5F or 5.0.1 with a mips
