But in fact you go way astray in picking PLUS for an example -- the "+"
function is significantly different from PLUS.

Ah, but I used them EXPLICITLY as examples of functions that don't fall into
this category. You didn't read carefully.

ps to those who didn't already catch it in my previous message. There's a
missing (- ...) which ought to be inside a FIXNUM-IDENTITY in one of the
displays. If you don't see it, your mind is probably making the right patch
automatically. If you noticed it, please assume I meant the obviously
correct thing ...
