A footnote on Weinreb's remarks about integrating character styles
and hardcopy output:
I saw recently a demonstration of SUN's "news" software that does
windowing and whatnot. It turns out that they use postscript internally
(with extensions), so that they can scale windows and the text in them
simultaneously. They can also scale directions separately, so that you
can make everything tall and narrow for instance. Since it all is post-
script internally, there is really no problem bringing it out in the
same way on a hardcopy device, and their boxes are getting fast enough
so that all this can be done at interactive speed.
