The biggest factor in the sale of used Lispms is the $10K software
license transfer fee that Symbolics has decided to impose.  This fee
applies unless the sale is between two parties that already jointly
owned the software license, for example, two labs in the same company.

Symbolics (at least their Austin office) also recognizes that buy-backs
by the lessee at the termination of long-term leases should not incur
this fee, so purchasing the machine you've been leasing for its whole
life does not require paying the fee.

Of course, if you are maintaining your own machines, you might buy used
ones for their parts; the software license fee only arises if you wish to 
run the machines...
