Distribution of Symbolics code and patches to it

[First, a quick reminder that administrative mail for the SLUG mailing list
should be sent to SLUG-REQUEST@AI.SRI.COM.]

I wish to remind everyone that the source code that you receive from Symbolics
is copyrighted and proprietary to Symbolics. If you received the code, your
legal organization (ie, company, university, whatever) signed a license
agreement covering the redistribution of that code. In general, you can
not freely distribute that code or modifications of it. [NOTE: I am not
a lawyer. This is my understanding of it. Contact your own legal department
or lawyer for further information.]

Some of you may have been around from the days when all of Symbolics's
source was distributed. Unfortunately, Symbolics has chosen not to distribute
it all (although access to most source can be purchased separately).
I would hate to see Symbolics restrict sources further because someone
distributed some of the code without thinking.

One year ago (today!), Symbolics eased their restrictions on
distributing modifications to their code. This was in response to
users' needs and requests. I think it was a great idea and one I wish
had happened much earlier. Let's not jeopordize it. (Also, if anyone
wants to express their appreciation of this policy, please let them hear
it but send it to SLUG-liaison@SYMBOLICS.COM rather than the SLUG
mailing list. We are straining the mail systems now. SLUG delivered
14K pieces of mail from our host to your hosts last week.)

The SLUG mailing list is *not* the SLUG mentioned below. The text refers
to SLUG, Inc. (the users' group). This SLUG mailing list may contain
readers who do not have various software licences. Certainly no one verifies
that all members of this mailing list has the appropriate licenses.

1 Distribution of System Modifications and Patches

2Here are the guidelines for the distribution of modified sources and
binaries between Symbolics' licensees. Any binary licensee of a version
of any item of Symbolics software may freely distribute modified binary
copies (in whole or in part) of that software to any other binary
licensee of the same version of such software. Any source licensee of
a version of any item of Symbolics software may freely distribute
modified source (or binary) copies (in whole or in part) of that
software to any other source licensee of the same version of such
software.0 2Any source licensee of any item of Symbolics software may
distribute modified binary copies of that software to any other binary
licensee of the same version of that software. SLUG may act as an
intermediary in any of these distributions. It is the responsibility of all
licensees to ensure that their modified software is distributed only to a
party who has a license to use the binary or source code, as the case
may be, of the version of Symbolics software for which modifications
have been created.
