I know this comment is rather elementary and far afield of all the wonderful
responses to date, but does the initial author know that CLOS generic
functions can be defined to dispatch off of instances as well as types?  The
gist of the original message seemed to indicate that writing methods for
instances was his intent.  (Now, dynamically creating the methods may still be
a problem.)
