We've been puzzled by the exact same problem - try logging in before starting the X server. We've repeated the experiment several times, (starting with a freshly booted machine), and logging in seems to be the magic procedure. By the way, has anyone successfully X'd into a Symbolics from a PC? (gag) We've tried two commercial packages, XVIEW and XVISION (which run under Windows), with no success.
