telnet: changing font?

I would have thought  (before you asked) that setting the attributes
for the window would be at least a simple way to accomplish it.
However, it seems that it requires a fixed-width font or it can't back
up properly.  Now I have to ask how to set the character width or
backspace capability so that it properly erases deleted chars.

Sorry about the Boeing remark.
