It has been pointed out to me (by Charlie Martin) that he can't get this
error to happen. He's right, because it is my error, not T's. After I sent
the query I remembered that there are some other difficulties in my program
in obtaining a pointer to the function-to-be-applied. The routines that
handle them are responsible for not finding the newly-traced object.
