Unfortunately, METAFONT does a terrible job when it has too few pixels to
work with.  The 10-pixel fonts are barely legible; they are adequate for
previewing the layout of a TeX document, but no one would want to use
them as a default font.  Knuth says that METAFONT was intentionally designed
to do a really good job with medium-resolution fonts at the expense of
low-resolution fonts.  He apparently never intended it for screens.
