xdr_bytes: out of memory

When reading in and parsing a moderately large data file, I get
"xdr_bytes: out of memory" many times, and then the CL process dies.
This doesn't happen on a nearly identical machine with less RAM and
less VM (!).  I can't find a reference to this message or what it
might mean in the documentation anywhere.  Suggestions?

I'm running Allegro CL 3.1.15.4 [Silicon Graphics Iris 4D] (9/18/90)
on both machines.
