spurious 'x' and 'r'

When I use the heath library I occasionally get "x"s or "r"s when I move
through the file using the <uparrow> or <downarrow> on the numeric keypad.
It seems to happen whenever I do about 4 or 5 in rapid succession.  The
extra characters are usually accompanied by a beep.  I have not noticed the 
problem when I use the ctrl-p or ctrl-n keys directly.  Is there a way to
fix the problem?  Is the problem in the tips?  In the Heath library?
