file name defaulting

I think there is a problem with the file name defaulting.   Consider
the following.

Visit file <DIR1>FOO1.BAR

Edit it.

Type C-X C-W, and then type <DIR2> followed by escape.  If <DIR2> has
only one file in it (for instance FOO2.MUMBLE), the escape gives
<DIR2>FOO2.MUMBLE instead of <DIR2>FOO1.BAR.
