Auto Save Max broken. Long filenames again?

In NE on MC (EMACS Version 162, TECO 1211), if I turn on Auto Save mode, it
looks to me like the variable Auto Save Max is being used to control the
highest -version number- of the auto saved files, rather than the -number-
of auto save files kept.  For example, I set Auto Save Max to 2 Emacs
then writes out _SAV69 1 and _SAV69 2 and from then on in it apparently
writes out _SAV69 3 and then immediately deletes it!  I presume this is
another artifact of long filenames.
