Actually, STATUS is a moderately non-LISPish thing to do.
which is not to say that non-LISPish things must be bad; just
that even LISP has to "accommodate" once in a while, and the
STATUS accommodation reflects the "realities" of 12 years ago.
Is it really worth changing now?
