"too many directory commands"

While trying to view a directory from zwei (meta-x view directory) I got a
"too many directory commands" condition which asked what pathname it sould
use instead. AI was up (though heavilly loaded). No matter what I did the
condition could not be exited. No matter what file name I gave it the same
thing happened again; neither control-g nor control-z did anything.
I finally resorted to a warm boot.
