I realized after I hit the Deliver button that the argument I made for
compilers taking advantage of side-effect information is not relevant:
after all, of course any (implementation specific) compiler can make
implementation-specific assumptions. While I can imagine
implementation-specific code analyzers, optimizers, and the like, it
isn't quite as compelling.
