       2. In addition, clim:formatting-item-list DOESN'T WORK in the above
case although it is documented to work. (I guess not enough thought
       was invested, after all!)

This behavior was put into CLIM:FORMATTING-ITEM-LIST for the sole
purpose of making command menus look nice.

That's eactly how I'm using it, but my command menus are home-grown
and have icons associated with the name of the command. So, I use a 2
row table: the first row is the icon, the second is the name; there is
one column for each icon/name pair. Because of the dual rows, I need
the behavior for formatting-table.

It does work, but you need
to supply :NO-INITIAL-SPACING NIL (gee, that's obvious).

I have tried both :no-initial-spacing nil and :no-initial-spacing t
and cannot get it to work either way. I am also specifying :n-rows 1
abd have tried specifying the :stream-widht with no luck.
