    Whoops.  I asked why I needed to define a new pres-type in my "view"
    problem.  I just realized that presentation-to-command-translators
    don't have a view argument.  Is this why a new pres-type is needed?
    Could I still use the old pres-type and test the view in the
    translator tester?

The view isn't actually stored in the presentation.

I would simply have different command tables for "system X" and "system
Y", and have different translators for each system.
