What machine are you using?
If you have X windows around, in the X11 bin directory 
you will find a conversion program called "giftoppm"
you can call this on your GIF file, it will produce
a portable pixmap file (PPM) and then simply run the piece
of code that was on this mailing list a couple of days ago
(Subject: Load ALL images into CLIM2.0)
to load "ppm" files into CLIM patterns...
