While porting some code from the VAX, I have found that the pathname
accessor functions (i.e. pathname-type) are not acceptable to SETF.
I can't decide whether this is a bug or not, but it may cause problems
with code from VAXLisp.  The workaround appears to be to use "merge-pathnames"
