UseNet newsgroup?

My concern is being cut off from discussions or receiving information late. I
tried to join a Smalltalk newsgroup on usenet and ran up against a wall. In
fact I am not even sure what the difference is between a newgroup and a mailing
list. If I can participate from internet fine. If not, then lets keep things as
are.
