We discovered this problem soon after MCL 2.0b1's release, and wrote an
insert that APDA was - for a while, at least - including with every shipment.
Either some old inventory (packaged before we found the problem) has just
been shipped, or the insert is no longer being sent out. I'll follow up with
APDA; meanwhile, here's a copy of the insert.

Sorry about the start-up problems (I hope your interaction with MCL has gotten
more enjoyable since then).

Mark.

Macintosh Common Lisp 2.0 Beta 1
New Installation Guide

We have discovered a bug in the copy-file function of MCL 2.0b1 running on
some combinations of Macintosh hardware and software. So long as you
do not explicitly call copy-file in your code, this should not cause you any
problems, since MCL 2.0b1 does not use it internally. Unfortunately, it means
that the installation process described in the Release Notes is not
reliable (in fact, it will cause some 68000-based Macintosh computers to crash
during installation). Please disregard the procedure described on page 2 of the
Release Notes and install MCL 2.0b1 manually, as described below. Manual
installation is mostly straightforward: simply a matter of copying the contents
of the MCL 2.0b1 disks into a new folder on your hard disk. The only tricky
parts concern disks # 4 and 5 (steps 6 through 9 below). Here you must be
careful to add the contents of the folders on the disks to folders on your hard
disk (that is, you must combine the contents of the folders, not replace one
folder with the other).

1. Make backups of all the disks and store the originals in a safe place.

2. Create a new folder on your hard disk. You can call this folder anything you
like, but we'll call it MCL 2.0b1 in the steps below.

3. Insert disk # 1, and copy the MCL 2.0b1 application into the MCL 2.0b1
folder (i.e., drag the application's icon to the new folder). Eject disk # 1
(drag the disk's icon to the trash).

4. Insert disk # 2, and copy the file MCL 2.0b1.image into the MCL 2.0b1
folder (do not copy init.fasl, as this is the file that runs the unreliable
installation process). Eject disk # 2.

5. Insert disk # 3, and copy all four items (two folders and two files) into
the MCL 2.0b1 folder. Eject disk # 3.

6. Open the MCL 2.0b1 folder. It should now contain:

   Examples folder (23 items)
	22 files in Examples
	   FF Examples folder (4 items)
		   4 files in FF Examples
   Library folder (1 item)
	   Inspector Folder (6 items)
		   6 files in Inspector Folder
   MCL 2.0b1 application
   MCL 2.0b1.image
   MCL Help
   MCL Help Map.Fasl

6. Insert disk # 4. The one item on this disk is a Library folder whose
contents must be copied into the Library folder in the MCL 2.0b1 folder on your
hard disk. Open Library on disk # 4, select Select All under the Edit menu (or
type command-A or Apple-A), and copy all of the selected items into the Library
folder on your hard disk. Eject disk # 4.

7. Open the Library folder on your hard disk. It should now look like this:

   Library folder (24 items)
	   22 files in Library
	   Inspector folder (6 items)
		   6 files in Inspector
	   Interfaces folder (26 items)
		   25 files in Interfaces
Late Breaking Interfaces folder (4 items)
4 files in Late Breaking Interfaces

8. Insert disk # 5. The one item on this disk is a Library folder which in
turn contains one item: an Interfaces folder. The contents of this Interfaces
folder must be copied into the Interfaces folder on your hard disk. Open
Interfaces on disk # 5, type command-A, and copy all of the selected items
into the Interfaces folder on your hard disk. Eject disk # 5.

9. Open the Interfaces folder on your hard disk. It should now look like this:

   Interfaces (97 items)
	   95 files in Interfaces
Late Breaking Interfaces folder (4 items)
4 files in Late Breaking Interfaces
	   Index folder (4 items)
		   4 files in Index

10. Insert disk # 6. Copy the three folders it contains to the MCL 2.0b1 folder
on your hard disk. Eject disk # 6.

11. The installation is complete. Here is what your MCL 2.0b1 folder should
look like:

   MCL 2.0b1 folder (9 items)
	   Examples folder (23 items)
		   22 files in Examples
		   FF Examples folder (4 items)
			   4 files in FF Examples
	   Interface Tools folder (9 items)
		   9 files in Interface Tools
	   Library folder (24 items)
		   22 files in Library
		   Inspector Folder (6 items)
			   6 files in Inspector Folder
		   Interfaces folder (97 items)
			   95 files in Interfaces
			   Index folder (4 items)
				   4 files in Index
Late Breaking Interfaces folder (4 items)
4 files in Late Breaking Interfaces
	   MCL 2.0b1 application
	   MCL 2.0b1.image
	   MCL Help
	   MCL Help Map.Fasl
	   Series folder (3 items)
		   3 files in Series
	   XP folder (3 items)
		   3 files
