Vertical grapher anyone?

Has anyone successfully modified the grapher (the one 
included with MCL as an example) to make it draw graphs 
from top to bottom (i.e. root at top center)? 

I tried half heartedly to swap X and Y coordinates in the 
functions layout,  layout-x and layout-y. That works for
layout-x, but not for layout-y. Someone doesn't set the x 
coordinate (handled by layout-y) of the root, so the left 
half of the graph gets stacked up at x = 0.

I guess I really need to understand it to modify it.
