Rich,
It sounds like you want a generate random points from a binomial distribtion
(or some other distribution). You do this by combining a random() function with
a gamma function (in the case of a binary distribution).
Take a look at Numerical Recipies in XXXX, section 7.3 (where XXXX is your language
of choice :)
