using icons for pop-up-menus

I am trying to figure out how to use icons as the dialog-item-text in a 
pop-up-menus - not as menu-items, but the dialog-item you click on.  (although
I assume the answer to this would help in using icons instead of text in
other situations.)

I have been trying to combine code from pop-up-menus and
icon-dialog-item but have had no success.

Any clues would be appreciated.
