The user-interface gurus would probably suggest that the
friendliest thing would be to add leaf nodes as needed,
corresponding to whatever it is you mean by selecting
a hierarchical menu.
That would be unambiguous and obvious to users, and trivial
to implement as well.
See the "Macintosh Human Interface Guidelines" (pp 79-82)
By the way, this is an awesome book on good taste and
user interface etiquette. I'd highly recommend it even to
those not writing for the Macintosh!
