from listener to my own window

I've written an application which involves continuous input from and
response to the user and which currently takes place in the listener
window.  I'm trying to define my own window (preferably with a background
picture and a scollable dialog box on top of that) in which to have the
dialog take place, but with only partial success so far.  Can anyone point
me at a relevant example or two?  I think there are some (several!)
aspects of working with windows and views that I haven't grokked yet!
